Five balls of fire —
a celebration of female spirit and body.
These costumes had a unique inspiration: an introitus. The entrance into a canal or hollow organ — most commonly referred to as the vaginal introitus, the opening that leads to the vaginal canal. The centre of all human existence. I felt I had to pay homage to the power of this mythical, unique female characteristic and its timeless power to give life — and to be so questioned and tortured throughout history and culture.
The centrepiece of the costumes was a set of five multilayered, millefoglie mousseline trousers with vertical panels. The colour palette combined many shades of orange, pink and coral against nude, skin-tone and nude-illusion elastic bodies. Five exceptional women. Five different temperatures in the same heat.
Ravel's Bolero, choreographed on trampolines — every jump, every move, every formation creating new shapes and abstract silhouettes constantly. At times you were not sure if you were watching a dance piece, or whether female power had been so personified and volcanic that it was erupting live, in front of your eyes.
