A Greek homage or a new age
rave — on a quest for the ultimate ecstasy.
Based on a live music performance by a Cretan group of Lyrarides, this was a poignant production about identity, history and the power of human pulse. Was this going to be a Greek homage or a new age rave party where the dancers were on a quest to achieve ultimate ecstasy through movement and improvised beat? I decided to research nature and find this exact combination organically. Spider webs formed in hard rocks became my point of reference.
The cast was covered in semi-destroyed brown, beige, forest green and off-white layers of elastic tights combined with acid-treated tie-dye tops, until they formed a body-focused shield following its exact proportions — allowing the dancers to express their ethos and individuality free of any constraints. Costumes that have already been lived in, and with every performance they get more and more destroyed.
Muscle memory at its best. The ensemble reads as a single broken landscape. Up close the costumes depict chaos. From a distance they blur into nature — a natural camouflage for the survival of the fittest.
