Can you ever fly
too close to the sun?
Apparently yes — if you wear costumes designed for extreme sports in all shades of grey, from technical materials not frequently used in contemporary dance productions, combined with reflective silver neoprene breastplates: super functional, elastic, exclusively made for this production.
Sleeveless dark red genderless tunics with intricate front and back pleating panels were the symbol of human pain and loss. Yet the mid-length long-sleeve metallic silk and georgette dresses with multiple panels, thick industrial zippers and visible thick stitching details were the big surprise: as the dancers extended, lifted and opened their arms, they morphed into the wings of a 1950s airplane — a metaphor for the heartbreaking story of Icarus and the power of a machine. Excited to fly and escape his fatal fate, he eventually fell to his death as his wax-made wings melted under the striking solar power of the sun.
A very important moment in my career, as I managed to introduce and develop countless new design and engineered innovations as a costume designer. It became an ode to the important relationships we build — as artists on international commissions we meet and work with so many glorious ateliers. Their craft, talent and technical virtuosity contributes so productively to the vision that it becomes a joint result of success for all.
